Al and Terry Mendelson are synonymous with perfection. They are probably in the dictionary. They put together an establishment in Beverly Hills that has been like a beacon for all delicatessens to follow. Of course we are referring to Nate n' Al's, the venerable delicatessen on North Beverly Drive.

      Al Mendelson got a job in a deli in Detroit, Michigan, a deli owned by Ivan Boesky's family. It was the best deli in Detroit, and Al Mendelson, who is no longer with us, absorbed everything he heard and saw. He learned his job well. Then he and his wife Terry moved to Beverly Hills. Al started the beginning of one of the great delis anywhere by introducing magnificent, corn rye bread; warmed to satisfaction. That was the beginning of perfection. Al and everyone who worked there, pried themselves serving the very best quality of lox, cream cheese, egg dishes, briskets, knishes- virtually everything you eat there is of superior quality, pleasant surroundings, the famed Nate n' Als bevy of marvelous waitresses, and a short wait to be seated. If you come to Nate 'n Als 57 years ago, believe us, nothing has changed. It is the best, easy.
